Hey Teacher, Get in Focus

A Professional Learning Workbook by Dr. Jackie Cope

Teaching is one of the most complex professions in the world.

Teachers are expected to understand curriculum, assessment, classroom management, differentiation, cultural responsiveness, social emotional learning, family engagement, and ever changing initiatives.

Every year there is a new program. A new training. A new framework teachers are expected to master quickly.

The message often feels like this:
Know everything. Implement everything. Do it immediately.

It can feel overwhelming.

Hey Teacher, Get in Focus was written for the teacher who is ready to take their professional learning into their own hands.

Not because they do not care about growth, but because they care deeply about becoming a strong educator and they want a way to do it that actually works.

What This Book Is About

This book is a guided workbook designed to help teachers organize, prioritize, and focus their professional learning.

Instead of trying to master everything at once, this process helps teachers identify the areas that will have the greatest impact on their teaching practice and their students.

The workbook walks teachers through a structured process to:

• Identify the professional skills that matter most in their classroom
• Organize professional learning goals for the school year
• Create a realistic focus plan rather than chasing every initiative
• Reflect on their practice with intention and clarity
• Turn ideas into actionable goals

It is not another theory book.

It is a working document for teachers who want to grow in a focused, sustainable way.

Why I Wrote This Book

When I was a classroom teacher, I remember the feeling of trying to know everything.

Every new training came with new expectations. Every new initiative felt urgent. I wanted to be a great teacher, but the amount of information coming at us was overwhelming.

So I created a process for myself.

Instead of trying to master everything at once, I began organizing my professional learning in a focused way. I chose specific areas of growth each year and built my learning around them.

That simple shift changed everything.

It helped me stay grounded in my classroom practice while continuing to grow professionally. That same process carried me through graduate school and ultimately through my doctoral program.

I earned my doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction just before my 30th birthday.

The process I describe in this workbook is the same one I used to guide my own professional learning.

It works.

Taking Ownership of Your Professional Learning

Teachers are lifelong learners.

But professional growth should not feel like constant overwhelm.

Strong teachers develop the ability to guide their own learning, identify what matters most for their students, and build knowledge intentionally over time.

When teachers take ownership of their professional learning, something powerful happens.

They move from reacting to initiatives to leading their own growth.

Hey Teacher, Get in Focus is designed to support that shift.

A Workbook You Can Actually Use

This book is designed as a workbook, not just something to read once and put on a shelf.

Inside you will find guided reflection prompts, goal setting tools, and planning structures that help teachers:

• Clarify their teaching priorities
• Focus professional learning efforts
• Track growth over the school year
• Build a sustainable approach to professional development

It can be used individually by teachers or as part of a professional learning community.

For the Teacher Who Wants More

This book is for the teacher who:

• Feels overwhelmed by the amount of professional learning expected today
• Wants a structured way to grow without burnout
• Believes great teaching is built through intentional learning
• Is ready to guide their own professional development

Teaching is demanding work. But growth does not have to feel chaotic.

With the right focus, professional learning becomes empowering rather than exhausting.
